There is one fact of life, which drives me to insanity! ‘Double yellow lines’! And wherever there are yellow lines you’ll find a traffic warden. They make me crazy, irate, livid and bonkers! So, to avoid friction one avoids yellow lines. And when I plan a rare coffee break with a friend during a working day, I choose a venue where there are no yellow lines in site!
Now, imagine my reaction when my premeditated and free parking plan still resulted in a fine! Four days after the pleasure of visiting my local out of town Beehive Shopping Center came a thumping pain in the shape of a fine! Oh yes! I partied for 3 hours 40 minutes and it cost me £85! I had 3 hours free parking but my 40 minutes cost me the fine! Were these signs all over the car park and clear for all to see? Yes, loads of little, yellow signs were dotted throughout the car park, but somehow I managed to miss them! When were they erected? Why did I miss the sign? Yes, obviously I ignored these signs as I have a weird fetish to pay parking fines!
In case you didn’t know, we are spoilt when it comes to the array of fines available to us. There is a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) issued by local councils; Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) issued by the police; and Parking Charge Notice (PCN) these are issued by private companies on behalf of generally landowners.
We have become a race that simply accepts whatever is thrown at us! Why do local authorities have the right to erect parking meters or paint ghastly yellow lines on our roads and then charge us to use them? Why can landowners of shopping centres employ these private companies to catch us when we are lured in by the temptation of retail outlets and watering holes? It is simply a mousetrap! Cruel and mean! Why has this become acceptable?
Double yellow lines and meters are spreading further and further out of city centers causing us grief and frustration through wasted time and money! Our environment is being harmed by these ridiculous rules, encouraging people to drive around finding somewhere to park or just simply being moved along by a warden when you just want to pick up your child. Their job is to prevent congestion – they love to exercise their godly power. Move on or I’ll fine you!
There are over 27 million cars in Great Britain. In 2010-11 English councils had an income of £1.3 billion from their on and off-street parking activities. The total surplus after deducting costs £358 million!
Traffic wardens are simply monitors to prevent chaos caused by parking obstruction. I believe our extreme parking laws are an invasion on our private lives, which is illegal and must be stopped!
